Hydromania!
Hydromania! is a spectacle designed to animate a public space, with the lyrical beauty of the interplay between water and light, combined with physical performance and music. This show starts from Avanti's world famous piece, 'The Spurting Man', extending the gradual build of the living fountain into the immediate environment, adding to the effect and continuing to surprise and delight the audience with this increase in scale. Hydromania is a site specific performance designed to engage with the architecture of the location. Often these performances involve artistic collaborations with other performing groups, including musicians, acrobats and dancers. A version of Hydromania was commissioned in 2000 by Watch this Space, to be performed on The National Theatre subsequently Manchester International Arts co produced a show to be performed on the Manchester Town Hall for the opening of the X.trax Festival 2001. Actively engaging with the architecture, effects commiserate with the scale of the building were created. Jets of water rose up the building while from above, on the clock tour, water gushed from the mouths of gargoyles. To these large-scale water effects were added light, smoke and a sound track. By using the host architecture as a stage we challenge the relationship between the place and the uses to which it is put overlaying ghost architectures onto the host demonstrating the multiple possibilities inherent in the site. Avanti Display have performed a number of these site specific
performances including: The National Theatre Trafalgar Square South Hill Park Arts Centre Bracknell Bradford Town Hall.
